For Immediate Release – February 13, 2024
Phoenix International Holdings, Inc. (Phoenix) is pleased to announce that Electrical Engineer Tim Coop has been named employee of the year for 2023.
During 2023, Tim has been a crucial member of the CURV7 ROV design and build. Through his ingenuity and problem-solving, he has gained the respect of both Phoenix and Clients by working to ensure that the offshore operators ha
ve reliable, easy-to-operate systems to accomplish the mission while also addressing safety concerns and mitigating risk through software and hardware stops.
As a member of the CURV7 project, he specified all hardware for the Power Distribution Center, including a newly designed transformer to produce cleaner power to minimize the chance of operational failures. His creativity led to designing the two subsea pressure housings, developing custom end caps to provide maximum surface area for cable penetrations, increasing reliability, and lowering the maintenance interval for connectors. Once the pressure housing design was completed, he specified the hardware needed for thruster control, navigation, hydraulic control, video distribution, and multiplexing, which he packaged up on the chassis to conform to the housings. When asked by operators for specialized controls and video displays, he d
esigned the hardware for controls that were installed ergonomically and oversaw the development of a video matrix computer that accommodated the operator’s needs. After developing all of the wiring schematics, he created the operating program to make all of this hardware work together and tailored it specifically for the pilots and copilots. This also included designing a custom user-friendly Graphical User Interface for the pilot to monitor the status of the vehicle and topside components.
Although an Electrical Engineer by trade, Tim has taken it upon himself to learn both the mechanical and hydraulic aspects of the systems. His advice and opinions are well respected by the employees who work with him, as well as by other professionals in the subsea industry. When the opportunity presented itself, Tim traveled offshore to learn how the systems are operated and maintained while mobilized, which has been invaluable to his design considerations. His work demonstrates his dedication by designing systems that exceed the Client’s criteria while making it easier for technicians to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain.
Other past projects and innovations aside, this will be the fourth ROV system for Phoenix’s Client, for whom Tim has been the lead engineer during design, build, and operation. His ability to design reliable, field-proven systems largely keeps Clients returning for additional system builds and upgrades performed by Phoenix. Throughout the design and build process, Tim has upheld his normal day-to-day responsibilities of providing knowledge and insight to technicians on the other eight operational systems and multiple support systems he oversees. He is the first to open the shop doors on any given day. Phoenix is grateful to have Tim on our Team and is thankful for his dedication, hard work, and ingenuity.
Congratulations on your well-deserved win Tim!
